DCI Banks: Aftermath, Part 2

Wait, what happened to that great show we saw last week?  The one with all the great tension, twists and turns, and reveals?  The characters are the same, it appears to be the same story line, but all the excitement is gone.  What about that mysterious and somewhat creepy neighbor?  Oh, she just had an affair with the serial killer but the wife knew anyway.  Ooo there's an accomplice?  Ooo the wife was a victim of horrific abuse as a child?  Oh, so SHE was the accomplice?  Oh.  OK.  The missing girl?  Dead.  The dad of the missing girl?  A jerk.
The DC investigating the death of the serial killer?  Is she hoping to sleep her way to a better post?  Do we like her?  Kind of yes, and kind of no.  Does DCI Banks like her?  Suppose so, he ended up wanting her on his team in the end, and had to give her (and us) an explanation.  And what was that all about anyway - she yells at Janet, then feels sorry for her, then yells at her again, then helps her.  This is who he wants on his team?
And why in the world was Banks allowed to bully Lucy into wanting to plead guilty?  Would that ever hold up?  Aren't we meant to mostly like Banks?
The acting was superb, camera work, direction, production all faultless.  In spite of all the problems with this second half, it was still miles above most other programmes on today, and for that reason gets high marks.  I just wish the second half lived up to the promise of the first.
