@Loster21's Tweets O' the Day Special Mark Goldman Edition from 2/12/2010

First published 2/14/10 on LOSTblog http://lostblog.com/2010/02/14/loster21s-tweets-o-the-day-special-mark-goldman-edition-from-2122010/

I was working yesterday and unable to get the tweets of the day for February 13, but that’s okay because on February 12, LOST editor and “LaFleur” director Mark Goldman was extremely generous with his time on the 12th and answered a bunch of Lostie questions about his work!  THANK YOU MARK GOLDMAN!

lindsey lindseycathryn – @mjgoldman … what has been the most fun ep for you to cut of the series so far? and/or, the most challenging? 12:56 AM Feb 12th
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @lindseycathryn Most fun ep? Def. “Constant”. Made edits you normally can’t make: jumping from 1 sc to another in middle of words, etc. 10:33 PM Feb 12th in reply to lindseycathryn
Mark Goldman mjgoldman -@lindseycathryn Plus Des/Pen! C’mon! Climactic phone call a great challenge but so much fun & SO rewarding. Great ep; proud of my part in it 10:36 PM Feb 12th in reply to lindseycathryn
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @lindseycathryn Most challenging? Nt sure.”Problem”sc.s which dont work (for whatever reason) R biggest challenge. But I won’t reveal those! 10:43 PM Feb 12th in reply to lindseycathryn

Rebecca Johnson derbykid – Hawaii is the ONLY state that didn’t get any kind of snow today? Guess even God knows not to mess with the shooting of #LOST Season 6. 4:09 PM Feb 12th
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @derbykid As 1 who directed in the on/off rain, and even had 2 days washed out by landslide, I assure you God LOVES messing w/ Lost’s shoot. 5:16 PM Feb 12th in reply to derbykid
Rebecca Johnson derbykid – @mjgoldman I stand corrected :) If it makes you feel better, I couldn’t tell any of that while watching “LaFleur”. 5:58 PM Feb 12th in reply to mjgoldman
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @derbykid When Juliet points out her old house & everyone starts runnin b/c “others R coming”, rained on/off all night til 2:30a: 14 hr day!  10:14 PM Feb 12th in reply to derbykid
Ben Shachar ben7418880 – @mjgoldman Are you or have you already directed any episodes this season? LaFleur was great 9:20 PM Feb 12th
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @ben7418880 Thanks but this year it’s editor Steve Semel’s turn to direct. He did awesome “Ji Yeon” & ep 613. Not enough episodes for all! 10:19 PM Feb 12th in reply to ben7418880
a c 803er – @mjgoldman the camera work and editing during the table outside scene was amazing, then they talk about the record spinning. the best stuff! 10:17 PM Feb 12th in reply to mjgoldman
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @803er U R 2 kind. But credit 2 Stephen Williams who suggested roundy-round & Marty Nicholson & MaryJo Marky who had challenge of cutting it 10:26 PM Feb 12th in reply to 803er
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @803er Constantly moving cams are really cool but tricky to edit, & I wish I’d had more time to shoot more of them 4 more options in editing 10:29 PM Feb 12th reply to 803er
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @803er But most directors I know wish they’d had more time — especially in episodic TV! And the scene turned out well, I suppose. 10:31 PM Feb 12th in reply to 803er
a c 803er – @mjgoldman And then there was “The Constant” the “I’m not supported to be here” cut was flawless 10:37 PM Feb 12th in reply to mjgoldman
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @803er Finding best frame to cut mid-sentence to next sc is tricky (but fun) b/c you want something inherently jarring to feel smooth. 10-48 PM Feb 12th in reply to 803er
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @803er J. Bender shoots energetic shots w/ lots of movement which often helped; a constantly changing frame helps the eye prepare for a cut. in reply to 803er
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @803er J. Bender’s shooting for the whole episode was great. 10:51 PM Feb 12th in reply to 803er
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @803er Not always, but often. Finding good cutting pt may take longer but if you find it, that MAY feel smoother than cutting still 2 still. 10:55 PM Feb 12th
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @803er But there are no rules; every unique pair of shots has it’s own unique challenge. 10:56 PM Feb 12th
a c 803er – @mjgoldman SSo was there just one unit or Bender jumped between two? 10:52 PM Feb 12th
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @803er Bender shot the whole ep over 10 days. 10:57 PM Feb 12th in reply to 803er
Mark Goldman mjgoldman – @803er “raft leaving sc” Another sc I’m proud of which couldn’t have happened without Mr. Bender’s directing. 11:23 PM Feb 12th in reply to 803er

Wow, thanks again to Mark Goldman for sharing this great info about the behind-the-scenes processes for putting together some of our favorite LOST episodes.  If you haven’t done it lately, make sure to catch the audio commentary for season 4’s The Constant by Damon, Carlton, and Mark to really get a feel for what he does and how exquisite his work is.

I’ll be back to “normal” (is that really a description of any Lostie?) tweets today, so make sure to use the #LOST hashtag when you tweet LOST, because I’ll be watching!
